Mental health needs to be understood in terms of what it is rather than what it does, which, unfortunately, is how mental health is commonly defined. Mental health is not simply the absence of mental illness. Also, poor mental health needs to be distinguished from mental illness. One could be mentally ill and still have reasonably healthy mental health.
No one has perfect mental health, but anyone can improve in this area. In addition to knowledge and skills, the willingness to change and perseverance are required to establish and maintain healthy mental health.
